  About Seoul

Standing at the crossroads of a noble past and a promising future, Seoul is noted for its historical, cultural, and natural attractions. Although many parts of the capital were destroyed during the Korean War, most of the city has been rebuilt since the 1950s with efforts made to preserve its historical heritage. Seoul, the capital city of the Chosun Dynasty for over 600 years, is a fascinating place where a 5,000 year-old culture and history blend harmoniously with modern architecture. Today Seoul is a major metropolis where visitors can still experience the essence of the ancient Korea which lingers on in the old palaces, the stately city gates, and the serene temples. Seoul has been the focal point of Koreans' thought and culture. With 11 million of the nation's 45 million population residing in the city, Seoul remains the center of the Republic of Korea's finance, politics, economy, education and culture. Seoul is home to major corporations, banks, government offices, schools, theatres, and entertainment facilities. It is internationally recognized as an excellent conference destination as seen through a series of world congresses and events it had hosted such as the 1988 Summer Olympic Games and 2001 Asian European Summit Meeting. Most recently, Seoul was the co-host of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan.
